Nana Tuffour Okai, professionally known as Bboy Lyricx, unveiled Africa’s first comprehensive visual documentation of breaking culture at Accra’s Nima-Maamobi Community Learning Center on July 19, 2025.

The President of Ghana’s Breaking Federation launched “Root of the Culture” a dual photo exhibition and video documentary chronicling his development of “Afro Break,” a fusion of traditional African movement with global breakdance aesthetics.
The immersive showcase traced Lyricx’s artistic evolution through striking imagery and personal narratives, highlighting both struggles and triumphs in establishing breaking as a recognized discipline. Attendees including KGL Foundation representatives and district officials observed how the project positions Ghana’s urban dance heritage ahead of breaking’s Olympic debut. For many young dancers present, the exhibition provided unprecedented insight into professional pathways within hip-hop culture.

“Root of the Culture sets a new benchmark,” noted event organizers, emphasizing its role in validating dance as cultural preservation. The documentary segment particularly resonated with youth, sparking discussions on breaking’s socio-cultural significance beyond athletic competition. Community reactions highlighted renewed motivation among emerging artists to pursue creative careers.
The initiative reflects Ghana’s growing arts infrastructure under the National Democratic Congress administration, which has prioritized cultural industries. By documenting intangible heritage through contemporary formats, Lyricx bridges generational divides while asserting breaking’s place in Africa’s artistic identity.
